#Givethanks, Thanksgiving and an NFL tradition

Thanksgiving is a time of giving thanks, eating a lot of turkey, spending time with family, and most of all, the biggest tradition, watching football.

The history of football on Thanksgiving dates back to 1920 and in 1934 the Detroit Lions played their first Thanksgiving game losing to the Chicago Bears, 19-16. 26,000 tickets were sold two weeks prior selling out the game at the University of Detroit Stadium. The 1934 Lions entered the Bears game with a record of 10-1. The next year, the Detroit Lions won the 1935 NFL Championship. Ever since then, football on Thanksgiving Day has become a tradition that started in Detroit. Check out more of the history and Thanksgiving Day Results from 1920-2012.

Week 11 approaching FAST, veteran placed on waivers!

Week 11 is approaching and the Houston Texans cut Ed Reed and is placed on waivers today according to USA Today. NFL.com has posted six potential teams where Reed could potentially go. Those teams include:

1. New England Patriots (7-2)
2. New York Jets (5-4)
3. Indianapolis Colts (6-3)
4. New Orleans Saints (7-2)
5. Dallas Cowboys (5-5)
6. Baltimore Ravens (4-5)

All six of these teams seems to be doing just fine considering almost all are in the top three in their conference. I think that the Ravens are out. I don't think they will take back their player they let go last year after their big Super Bowl win to the San Francisco 49ers; however, with players hurt, Reed could be a temp. YIKES! Pats, Jets, and Saints look promising. I am eager to see who will put up the free safety; however, does this mean that the 35-year-old vet has run out of gas and has played his LAST NFL game? Take a look and determine for yourself! Taking a peek at his career statistics, this 2013 NFL year has been a dramatic decrease for Reed.

Happy Veteran's Day

Happy Veteran’s Day to those who will, is, and has served in the Armed Forces. Spinning off my blog post from last week, the National Football Leagues Salute to Service has raised $216,600 so far. The NFL donates $100 for every point scored during the Salute to Service games. To show your support to our military, you can bid on game camo worn items and grab your Salute to Service gear at the National Football League store.

Veteran’s day is next Monday and in the NFL, the month of November is Salute to Service. With support from all 32 NFL teams, they take pride and commitment in supporting all military personnel and raise awareness for the sacrifices they have made.  Check out the short video a Salute to Service.

Each player on every NFL team will show support with a camo ribbon sticker on the back of their helmets along with camo towels and military colored sweatshirts for team personnel. 

All 32 teams will highlight the relationship between the local military bases and units. Click here for a list of teams and their involvements with the Armed Forces during the games this month.
